She never told us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you were too busy calling me worthless to ask,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Then I turned to Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounselor, your clients committed perjury today. My father testified that I changed the locks. They claim I needed the money. I am showing who was actually desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverruled,\u201d the judge said. \u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have debts. Everyone has debts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have a second mortgage in default?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2026 maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd did Nana Rose know about these debts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did,\u201d I said. \u201cBecause I told her after a collection agency called her looking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t leave the estate to me because I tricked her. We\u2019re your parents!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rushed toward me and grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at her hand and remembered every time that same hand had pushed me away. I remembered the funeral. I remembered every lie she had told minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I removed her hand calmly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am an officer of the court, Mother.
