Representative Mike Simpson put forth the idea as part of a funding bill tied to the Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency.<\/p>\n

If approved, the Opera House\u2014the Kennedy Center\u2019s second-largest venue\u2014would be renamed the \u201cFirst Lady Melania Trump Opera House.\u201d<\/p>\n

In keeping with tradition, Melania Trump currently holds an honorary role as chair of the Kennedy Center.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Back in February, Donald Trump removed several board members who had been appointed by President Joe Biden and installed his own picks, eventually leading to his own appointment as board chair.<\/p>\n

However, not all lawmakers support the renaming.<\/p>\n

Representative Chellie Pingree, a Democrat from Maine, criticized the move during the committee hearing, calling it \u201cdivisive.\u201d<\/p>\n

She remarked, \u201cThe Republicans snuck in, I think, something that\u2019s slightly divisive\u2014renaming a part of the Kennedy Center after a family member of this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n
