\nCharlotte felt every eye in the room turn toward Walter.
\n“What do you mean someone else was driving?”
\nWalter placed his phone on the dining table.
\n“The parking garage cameras captured Eleanor’s Mercedes leaving at 4:18 this afternoon.”
\n“And?”
\n“The driver’s face wasn’t visible.”
\nCharlotte frowned.
\n“So how do they know it wasn’t Grandma?”
\nWalter looked at her carefully.
\n“Because Eleanor never sat in the driver’s seat.”
\nSilence swallowed the room.<\/p>\n
Jennifer covered her mouth.

\n“Show me.”
\nWalter opened the security footage on his tablet.
\nThe underground garage appeared.
\nEleanor’s black Mercedes waited in its reserved space.
\nAt exactly 4:11 p.m., Eleanor walked into view carrying only her handbag.

\nJennifer nodded.
\n“…she trusted completely.”
\nThomas immediately reached for his phone.
\n“I’m calling Ethan.”
\nCharlotte looked surprised.
\n“Why?”
\n“Because if Mother trusted anyone besides Dad…”<\/p>\n
He stopped speaking.<\/p>\n
Charlotte finished the sentence.<\/p>\n
“…it would have been Uncle Ethan.”<\/p>\n
Thomas dialed.<\/p>\n
The call connected.<\/p>\n
“Ethan.”<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
Another pause.<\/p>\n
“When did you last speak to Mother?”<\/p>\n
Thomas’s expression changed.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
Charlotte stepped closer.<\/p>\n
“What did he say?”<\/p>\n
Thomas slowly lowered the phone.<\/p>\n
“He hasn’t spoken to her in almost three weeks.”<\/p>\n
Jennifer whispered,<\/p>\n
“Then who was driving?”<\/p>\n
Nobody had an answer.<\/p>\n
Walter suddenly remembered something.<\/p>\n
“There may be another camera.”<\/p>\n
Everyone looked at him.<\/p>\n
“The executive elevator.”<\/p>\n
Charlotte’s pulse quickened.<\/p>\n
“If someone met Grandma upstairs…”<\/p>\n
“We’ll know.”<\/p>\n
Walter immediately called the security director.<\/p>\n
“Pull every camera covering the executive floor between three-thirty and four-thirty.”<\/p>\n
The reply came almost instantly.<\/p>\n
“They’re already reviewing it.”<\/p>\n
Charlotte stared toward Richard’s empty study.<\/p>\n
Her grandfather had spent months preparing for today.<\/p>\n
He anticipated Thomas’s failure.<\/p>\n
He prepared evidence.<\/p>\n
He trusted Eleanor.<\/p>\n
Could he also have expected…<\/p>\n

Twenty minutes later Walter’s phone rang again.<\/p>\n
He answered on speaker.<\/p>\n
“We found additional footage.”<\/p>\n
Walter straightened.<\/p>\n
“What does it show?”<\/p>\n
A long pause followed.<\/p>\n
Then the security director spoke carefully.<\/p>\n
“Mrs. Mitchell did not leave the executive floor alone.”<\/p>\n
Charlotte’s heartbeat quickened.<\/p>\n
“Who was with her?”<\/p>\n

“I don’t believe this.”<\/p>\n
Walter frowned.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n

The room became perfectly silent.<\/p>\n
“…is carrying Richard Mitchell’s old leather briefcase.”<\/p>\n
Thomas froze.<\/p>\n
“That’s impossible.”<\/p>\n
Walter’s voice became barely audible.<\/p>\n
“Richard was buried with that briefcase.”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
The security director corrected him quietly.<\/p>\n
“He wasn’t.”<\/p>\n
Charlotte felt cold.<\/p>\n
She remembered the funeral.<\/p>\n
She remembered the polished mahogany coffin.<\/p>\n

“Take us there.”<\/p>\n
