Dana said.
“Will everyone know?”
“Maybe some adults will.”
“Kids?”
“Hopefully not details.”
Kaylee looked down.
“What if they think I’m weird?”
Mia would have answered immediately.
She would have said everyone is weird.
I wished she were with us.
Instead I said, “Anybody who thinks you’re weird for asking for help isn’t somebody whose opinion matters.”
Kaylee considered that.
“That’s something Mia would say.”
“She’d probably say it louder.”
That got another tiny smile.
Then Kaylee asked, “Do you think Mom left because of me?”
There are questions adults wish they could answer with certainty.
I couldn’t.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because you were five.”
“Maybe I was bad.”
“No five-year-old makes a mother disappear because they were bad.”
“But what if she didn’t like me?”
I looked at the photograph.
The woman kneeling beside Kaylee.
Laughing.
Her hand around the little girl’s waist.
“I don’t know your mom,” I said. “But that picture doesn’t look like somebody who didn’t like you.”
Kaylee stared at it.
“She used to sing while she made toast.”
“What did she sing?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Anything else?”
“She burned toast a lot.”
“That’s relatable.”
“What?”
“I’m terrible at toast.”
She smiled again.
A little more this time.
Then she said, “Dad said she was sick.”
I turned toward her.
“Sick how?”
“I don’t know.”
“He told you she was sick before she left?”
“After.”
“What did he say?”
“He said some people’s brains make them leave.”
I felt anger rising.
Careful.
We still didn’t know the truth.
Maybe Erin had struggled with something.
Maybe she really had left.
Maybe Greg had simplified it for a child.
Maybe.
There was that word again.
Maybe.
At the hospital, a pediatric doctor examined Kaylee’s feet.
I stayed outside during the most private parts.
Dana remained according to procedure.
When the doctor came out, she looked unhappy.
She didn’t share medical details with me.
She couldn’t.
But she asked whether law enforcement already had the shoes.
That told me enough.
A social worker joined us.
More forms.
More waiting.
More whispered conversations in hallways.
At 5:17, my husband texted.
Mia was safe at my sister’s.
Police had finished at our house.
Nothing obvious was missing.
That should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
What had the intruder carried out?
At 5:31, Detective Chen called Dana.
Dana stepped away.
I watched her posture change.
Shoulders straight.
Head still.
Then she said, “You found it?”
My heart stopped.
Kaylee looked at me.
She had heard too.
Dana turned away.
“Inside?”
Pause.
“Okay.”
Another pause.
“No, do not tell the child yet.”
Too late.
Kaylee was already watching.
Dana hung up.
“Did they find the room?”
Kaylee asked.
Dana hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Was the box there?”
“The blue box was in the basement.”
“Was Mom’s phone inside?”
Dana looked at me.
Then back at Kaylee.
“We’re still figuring out what was inside.”
“Was her license?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Kaylee knew adults sometimes said I don’t know when they actually meant I can’t tell you.
She stared at Dana.
“You know.”
Dana sat beside her.
“I know some things. But police need to check them before we talk about them.”
“Did they find Mom?”
My stomach dropped.
Dana’s eyes softened.
“No.”
Kaylee looked away.
She had expected something.
I wasn’t sure whether it was hope or fear.
“Okay.”
Dana continued.
“The locked room was empty.”
Kaylee looked back.
“Empty?”
“Mostly.”
“What does mostly mean?”
Dana did not answer.
That word followed me for the next two hours.
Mostly.
At 6:12, we received preliminary approval for Kaylee to stay with us overnight under emergency kin-like placement rules while a longer decision was made.
I signed more paperwork than when we bought our house.
Background checks.
Home safety requirements.
Emergency contact numbers.
No contact with Greg or Tasha.
No unsupervised contact with anyone connected to the investigation unless approved.
I would have signed them upside down in blood if they’d asked.
At 7:04, we finally left the hospital.
My husband met us at home.
Police had gone.
The shoelaces and note were gone too.
Evidence.
The house felt different.
Someone had entered it.
Even though there was no broken glass.
No overturned furniture.
No empty drawers.
Violation does not require visible damage.
Mia ran from the kitchen when we walked in.
She hugged Kaylee so hard they nearly fell over.
“You’re staying?”
“Tonight.”
“YES.”
“Mia.”
“Sorry.”
Kaylee smiled.
Mia grabbed her hand.
“I moved my stuff.”
“Where?”
“Half my closet.”
“You didn’t have to.”
“I know.”
That simple exchange made my eyes burn.
We ate grilled cheese because nobody had the energy for anything else.
Kaylee ate two.
Then asked if she could have another.
My husband made three more.
He didn’t comment.
He just cooked.
At 8:15, the girls sat on the living room floor watching an animated movie about talking animals.
It was painfully ordinary.
I had forgotten how beautiful ordinary could be.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Chen.
I stepped into the kitchen.
“Hello?”
“Is Kaylee nearby?”
“Living room.”
“Can you move somewhere private?”
My pulse quickened.
I went into the laundry room and shut the door.
“Okay.”
“We completed the first search.”
“And?”
“The blue box contained identification belonging to Erin Whitman.”
I shut my eyes.
“Her driver’s license?”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
“Several personal documents. Old bank cards. A prescription bottle. Letters.”
“Her phone?”
“A phone was recovered.”
“Is it hers?”
“We haven’t confirmed ownership.”
“Does it work?”
“It’s being processed.”
“What was in the locked room?”
Silence.
“Detective?”
“We found evidence the room had been recently cleaned.”
Every hair on my arms lifted.
“What kind of evidence?”
“I can’t go into detail.”
“Recently meaning when?”
“We’re determining that.”
“Was there blood?”
I don’t know why I asked.
Maybe because every terrible story teaches your brain to leap toward the worst possible answer.
“I’m not discussing forensic findings.”
Which was not no.
I sat on the dryer.
“What did you find?”
“A chair.”
I waited.
“Okay.”
“A mattress.”
My mouth went dry.
“What else?”
“Fasteners installed into the concrete wall.”
I said nothing.
My mind refused to make meaning from the sentence.
“Fasteners?”
“Metal mounting points.”
“For what?”
“We don’t know yet.”
She was careful.
Always careful.
“Was Kaylee ever in that room?”
“She says no.”
“Do you believe her?”
“We don’t make those calls based on belief.”
Right.
Evidence.
“What about the burn barrel?”
“We recovered partially burned material.”
“Documents?”
“Some appear to be paper. Some fabric.”
“What fabric?”
“Still processing.”
“Where are Greg and Tasha?”
“Greg is speaking with investigators.”
“And Tasha?”
Silence.
That silence terrified me.
“You lost her.”
“We are actively trying to locate her.”
“She’s missing?”
“Her vehicle was found abandoned.”
I stood.
“Where?”
“About six miles from the house.”
“How long ago?”
“We’re still establishing timeline.”
“Do you think she’s coming here?”
“We’ve increased patrol near your residence.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No, we do not have specific evidence she is coming to your house.”
“She already came to my house.”
“We haven’t established who entered your home.”
“Come on.”
“I understand.”
“No, you keep telling me you understand.”
I lowered my voice so the girls wouldn’t hear.
“An eight-year-old is sitting twenty feet away from me. Somebody entered my home and left a warning. The woman she’s terrified of has disappeared. Police found a locked room with a mattress and metal fixtures in the wall. Tell me what I am supposed to do with that.”
Chen was quiet for a moment.
Then:
“Lock your doors.”
“I already did.”
“Keep outside lights on.”
“They are.”
“Do not answer the door unless you know who it is.”
“Obviously.”
“Call immediately if you see anyone suspicious.”
“I will.”
“And don’t discuss the search details with Kaylee yet.”
“Why?”
“Because she may be formally interviewed tomorrow. We don’t want outside information affecting what she remembers.”
That made sense.
Again, I hated it.
“Okay.”
Before she hung up, I asked the question I’d been avoiding.
“Do you think Erin Whitman is alive?”
Another long silence.
“We don’t know.”
Not yet.
At 9:10, I checked every window twice.
My husband checked them again.
Kaylee and Mia slept in Mia’s room.
We offered separate beds.
Kaylee wanted the floor.
Mia immediately dragged her own blankets onto the floor beside her.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
There it was again.
I know.
The strongest two words my daughter knew.
I left the hallway light on.
At 10:03, I sat at the kitchen table with my husband.
Neither of us spoke for several minutes.
Finally he said, “You’re thinking about the room.”
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
“The mattress.”
“Don’t.”
“I know.”
“The wall.”
“Don’t.”
“I know.”
We sat there.
Then he asked, “Do you think Greg knows where Tasha is?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because every time something happens, he already looks guilty before anyone explains it.”
“That’s not evidence.”
“I know.”
“You’re starting to sound like the detective.”
“I hate the detective.”
“No, you don’t.”
“No.”
I rubbed my face.
“I actually like her.”
He reached across the table.
“Whatever happens, Kaylee can stay here as long as they let her.”
“I know.”
“I mean it.”
“I know.”
Around 10:40, my sister called.
She had found something.
“Before you panic, Mia is fine.”
“Then why would I panic?”
“Because of what she told me.”
I sat straighter.
“What?”
“She said someone was parked across from our house when we arrived.”
My heart lurched.
“What kind of car?”
“Dark SUV.”
“Did you call police?”
“It’s gone.”
“Did you get the plate?”
“No.”
“Why didn’t you call me earlier?”
“Because I wasn’t sure it meant anything.”
Everything meant something now.
“What did Mia say?”
“She said she’d seen it before.”
“Where?”
“School.”
My hands went cold.
“Whose?”
“She doesn’t know.”
I called Detective Chen immediately.
She took the information.
Patrol was sent toward my sister’s neighborhood.
At 11:18, I finally lay down.
I did not sleep.
At 11:46, I heard footsteps in the hallway.
I sat up.
Kaylee stood in our bedroom doorway.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Are you okay?”
She shook her head.
“Bad dream?”
“No.”
“Do you want to come in?”
She walked inside.
My husband woke up.
Kaylee stood at the foot of our bed.
“I remembered something.”
I turned on the lamp.
“What?”
“The red suitcase.”
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?”
“Mom didn’t use that one when she traveled.”
I frowned.
“You said it was hers.”
“It was.”
“Then what do you mean?”
“She hated it.”
“Why?”
“Wheel was broken.”
Okay.
“And?”
Kaylee twisted the purple friendship bracelet around her fingers.
“She kept it in the attic.”
“Before she disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I helped her put Christmas decorations up there.”
I sat fully upright.
“So the suitcase was stored in the attic.”
She nodded.
“Then after she disappeared, you saw it beside the blue box?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Last Christmas.”
More than two years after Erin supposedly left.
Why would a suitcase she didn’t use, stored in the attic, later be beside a secret box containing her belongings?
I tried not to show my reaction.
“Anything else?”
Kaylee hesitated.
“Mom had a secret pocket.”
“In the suitcase?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“She kept my birthday money there once because Dad kept borrowing cash.”
My husband and I exchanged a look.
“What was in the pocket when you saw the suitcase?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you check?”
“Tasha caught me before I could.”
“What kind of pocket?”
“Inside the bottom.”
“Zip?”
“No. You pull the fabric.”
A hidden compartment.
I reached for my phone.
Detective Chen answered after four rings.
I apologized for the time.
She didn’t care about the time.
I explained.
Red suitcase.
Broken wheel.
Attic.
Secret compartment.
There was silence.
Then she said, “The suitcase was not at the residence when we searched.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“The photograph shows it. But officers did not locate a red suitcase.”
“Could Greg have moved it?”
“Possible.”
“Tasha?”
“Possible.”
“Could that be what the person took from my house?”
She paused.
“Why would the suitcase be at your house?”
Good question.
It made no sense.
Unless…
Unless what had been taken from my house wasn’t the suitcase.
Unless somebody had come looking for something else.
“Detective.”
“Yes?”
“What if they weren’t leaving the shoelaces as a warning?”
“What do you mean?”
“What if the warning was secondary?”
“Go on.”
“What if whoever entered my house was looking for something?”
Silence.
“The backpack,” I whispered.
Kaylee had brought her backpack to my house.
The tracker had been hidden in it.
The photograph.
The key.
The note.
If Tasha knew Kaylee might have taken something…
The intruder had gone straight to Mia’s room.
Where Kaylee had slept.
“They were looking for the backpack.”
Chen was already speaking to someone else in the background.
Then she returned.
“Where is the backpack now?”
I froze.
At the school?
No.
Hospital?
Wait.
We had brought it home.
I remembered placing it beside the hallway table when we arrived.
“Downstairs.”
“Do not touch it.”
“What?”
“Do not touch the backpack.”
“Why?”
“We need to examine it again.”
“The police already saw it.”
“Kaylee had access to it afterward?”
“Yes.”
“Was it ever unattended?”
“Of course it was. It’s a child’s backpack.”
“Move everyone away from it.”
My pulse skyrocketed.
“What do you think is inside?”
“I don’t know.”
“Detective.”
“Move away from it.”
I woke my husband completely.
We moved the girls into our bedroom.
I told them we were playing a strange late-night game.
Mia immediately knew I was lying.
Kaylee didn’t ask.
Ten minutes later, two officers arrived.
One wore gloves.
They photographed the backpack where it sat.
Then removed it.
At 12:34 a.m., Detective Chen called.
“There was another device.”
My skin went cold.
“Another tracker?”
“No.”
“What?”
“A small audio recorder.”
I nearly dropped the phone.
“Where?”
“Inside the backpack frame.”
Not the lining.
Inside the structural padding.
Hidden.
“Was it recording?”
“We’re determining that.”
“How long could it record?”
“Potentially hours depending on settings.”
“Could Tasha hear it live?”
“Not this specific model, according to the officer who examined it.”
“Then why put it there?”
“To recover conversations later.”
I stared at the dark kitchen.
Every conversation from the sleepover.
Kaylee speaking to Mia.
Me talking to Kaylee.
The call to police?
The school?
Maybe.
If the recorder had been retrieved regularly.
Then Tasha could know exactly what Kaylee said.
Kaylee’s phrase echoed in my head.
She checks if I told.
I had assumed Kaylee meant her body.
Her shoes.
Her behavior.
What if she meant more?
“Tasha checks the backpack,” I whispered.
“What?”
“Kaylee said, ‘She checks if I told.’ We thought she meant checking injuries.”
Chen was silent.
“What if she means she checks the recorder?”
“Ask Kaylee nothing about that tonight.”
“Okay.”
“We’ll handle it tomorrow.”
After the police left, I went back upstairs.
Kaylee was awake.
Mia had finally fallen asleep beside her.
My husband sat in the chair by the window.
Kaylee whispered, “Was there something in my bag?”
I wanted to lie.
I couldn’t.
“Yes.”
Her face didn’t change.
“What?”
“A recorder.”
She closed her eyes.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“Kaylee?”
She started crying.
Quietly.
“Tasha calls it the truth machine.”
My husband stood.
I sat beside Kaylee.
“What does that mean?”
“She puts it in my things.”
“How often?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you know it was there tonight?”
“No.”
“Has she done it before?”
Kaylee nodded.
“Where?”
“My coat.”
“Anywhere else?”
“Stuffed animals.”
My stomach twisted.
“What does she do with recordings?”
“Listens.”
“Then what?”
“If I said something bad, she knows.”
“What happens?”
Kaylee folded herself smaller.
“Rules.”
That word again.
Rules.
“What rules?”
She looked at my husband.
Then at me.
“Different ones.”
“You don’t have to tell us tonight.”
“Sometimes I have to stand.”
“Stand where?”
“Kitchen.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
“What else?”
“Sometimes no dinner.”
My husband turned away.
I knew why.
He didn’t want her seeing his face.
“Sometimes shoes.”
I froze.
“The sneakers?”
She nodded.
“She makes you wear them?”
“After.”
“After what?”
Kaylee couldn’t answer.
I stopped.
Enough.
She had told us enough for one lifetime.
I tucked the blanket around her.
“You can sleep.”
“Will you stay?”
“Yes.”
I sat on the floor beside the mattress.
At some point after one, she fell asleep.
I did not.
At 6:22 the next morning, my phone rang.
Detective Chen.
Too early.
Calls that early are rarely good.
I slipped into the hallway.
“Hello?”
“We found Tasha.”
My heart pounded.
“Where?”
“Bus station.”
“Trying to leave?”
“We don’t know.”
“Is she in custody?”
“She’s being detained while we sort through several issues.”
“Did she have the red suitcase?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
I gripped the banister.
“Did you open the secret compartment?”
“We did.”
“And?”
Another pause.
“There was cash.”
“How much?”
“Significant amount.”
“What else?”
“Two passports.”
“Whose?”
“One belongs to Tasha.”
“And the other?”
“Erin Whitman.”
I stopped breathing.
“Erin’s passport?”
“Yes.”
“Why would Tasha have Erin’s passport?”
“That’s one of many questions.”
“What else was inside?”
“Photographs.”
“What photographs?”
“We’re reviewing them.”
“And?”
“A storage unit receipt.”
“Where?”
“About forty minutes outside town.”
My skin prickled.
“When was it rented?”
“Three years ago.”
The same time Erin disappeared.
“Whose name?”
Silence.
“Detective?”
“Greg Whitman’s.”
I sat on the top step.
“So you’re searching it.”
“We’re obtaining authorization.”
Again.
Procedure.
Evidence.
I didn’t argue.
Not this time.
“Does Greg know you found the receipt?”
“Not yet.”
“Where is he?”
“Still speaking with detectives.”
“Is he arrested?”
“No.”
“Do you think Erin could be in that storage unit?”
The sentence sounded insane as soon as I said it.
Chen didn’t answer.
“I can’t speculate.”
“Right.”
“I’m calling because we need Kaylee brought to the child advocacy center at ten.”
“Okay.”
“And there is something else.”
Of course there was.
“There always is.”
Chen ignored that.
“We processed some of the material from the blue box.”
“And?”
“One of the letters appears to have been written by Erin.”
“To whom?”
“Kaylee.”
My throat tightened.
“Did Kaylee ever receive it?”
“Based on what we know, probably not.”
“When was it written?”
“Two months after the date Greg says Erin left.”
I sat perfectly still.
If Erin wrote Kaylee after she supposedly disappeared…
She had been alive.
At least then.
“What does it say?”
“I can’t read it to you.”
“Can Kaylee have it?”
“Eventually, depending on the investigation.”
“What does it mean?”
“There is a line investigators are focused on.”
I hated every pause in this conversation.
“What line?”
Chen hesitated.
Then she gave me the gist, not the exact wording.
Erin had written that she was trying to come home.
That Greg was preventing her from seeing Kaylee.
That she had contacted someone for help.
My heart hammered.
“Who?”
“The letter uses a first name.”
“What name?”
“Rebecca.”
“Do you know who Rebecca is?”
“We’re working on it.”
I suddenly remembered something.
School pickup.
A woman.
Years ago.
No.
Maybe imagination.
“Was Rebecca a relative?”
“Unknown.”
“Friend?”
“Unknown.”
“What happened to Erin after she wrote the letter?”
“We don’t know.”
I pressed fingers to my forehead.
Then Chen said, “There’s one more detail.”
“Tell me.”
“The envelope was never mailed.”
“Then how did Greg get it?”
“We don’t know.”
I closed my eyes.
Everything always came back to those words.
We don’t know.
At 10:00, Kaylee sat in the child advocacy center.
The place looked intentionally unlike a police station.
Soft chairs.
Painted walls.
Books.
Stuffed animals.
A little fish tank.
The kind of room designed by people who knew children remember rooms.
A trained interviewer named Ms. Alvarez spoke with Kaylee privately.
We watched only where permitted.
I wasn’t allowed to hear much.
That was probably good.
Mia stayed with my husband.
Dana sat with me in the waiting area.
Two hours passed.
At 12:18, Ms. Alvarez came out.
Her expression was professional.
Unreadable.
Detective Chen went into a private room with her.
Then Reed.
Then Dana.
Nobody told me anything.
I wanted to claw through the wall.
Finally Dana returned.
“Kaylee did well.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means she answered what she could.”
“Did she say something new?”
Dana hesitated.
“Some things.”
“About the room?”
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“I thought she said she’d never been inside.”
“She hasn’t.”
“Then what?”
“She saw someone else go inside.”
“Who?”
Dana looked toward the closed interview room.
“Her father.”
“Greg?”
“Yes.”
“That’s not surprising.”
“Not alone.”
Every sound in the waiting area disappeared.
“Who was with him?”
“Kaylee isn’t certain.”
“Adult?”
“Yes.”
“Man or woman?”
“Woman.”
“Tasha?”
“Kaylee says no.”
My skin went cold.
“Her mother?”
Dana didn’t answer.
“Was it Erin?”
“Kaylee was around five. The memory is incomplete.”
“But she thinks?”
“She remembers seeing her father helping a woman down the basement steps late at night.”
“Helping?”
“That’s the word she used.”
“Was the woman hurt?”
“Kaylee doesn’t know.”
“Was she walking?”
“She says not normally.”
My stomach turned.
“And then?”
“Greg noticed Kaylee watching.”
“What happened?”
“He carried her upstairs.”
“What did he tell her?”
Dana exhaled.
“He told her she had been dreaming.”
I stared at her.
“When was this?”
“Shortly before Erin disappeared.”
My hands began trembling.
“Jesus.”
“Don’t say any of this to Kaylee.”
“I won’t.”
Then Detective Chen came out.
“We’re moving on the storage unit.”
“Can you tell me what you’re looking for?”
“No.”
“You know what you think you’re going to find.”
“We don’t.”
She looked tired now.
Really tired.
“That’s the truth.”
At 1:46, police entered the storage unit.
I know the exact time because I stared at the clock while waiting for the call.
It came at 2:19.
Chen again.
I went outside the advocacy center.
“What did you find?”
“A lot.”
Not what I wanted to hear.
“Is Erin there?”
“No.”
Relief hit first.
Then fear.
“What is there?”
“Furniture.”
“What kind?”
“Household furniture.”
“Whose?”
“We’re identifying it.”
“Anything from Kaylee’s old house?”
“Possibly.”
“Documents?”
“Yes.”
“What documents?”
“Financial records. Medical records.”
“Whose medical records?”
“Erin’s.”
My heart jumped.
“What do they say?”
“Can’t discuss details.”
“Detective.”
“I know.”
“What else?”
“Clothing.”
“Erin’s?”
“Possibly.”
“Anything that tells you where she went?”
Silence.
Then:
“There was another photograph.”
I gripped the phone.
“Of what?”
“Erin.”
“Taken when?”
“Based on a timestamp, several weeks after Greg says she left.”
Alive.
Several weeks after.
“Where was she?”
“The photograph appears to have been taken inside the storage unit.”
I felt nauseous.
“Why would Erin be in the storage unit?”
“We don’t know.”
“Was she alone?”
“No.”
“Who was with her?”
Another pause.
“Greg.”
My knees weakened.
“What are they doing?”
“Standing beside boxes.”
“Does she look okay?”
“I can’t make that judgment.”
“Is Tasha there?”
“No.”
“Who took the picture?”
“Unknown.”
The obvious question.
The one that changed everything.
“If Erin was alive after Greg said she’d abandoned Kaylee, why lie?”
“We’re asking him that now.”
“What did he say?”
“He claims he lied to protect Kaylee.”
“From what?”
“Erin.”
I stared at the parking lot.
“Why?”
“He says Erin was unstable and dangerous.”
“Do you believe him?”
“Belief isn’t the question.”
Right.
Evidence.
Always evidence.
“Then what evidence does he have?”
“He claims there was a restraining order.”
“Was there?”
“We found no record of one.”
That told me enough.
Chen continued.
“He also claims Erin voluntarily gave him her identification and left the country.”
“Without her passport?”
Silence.
Exactly.
“How does he explain Tasha having it?”
“He doesn’t.”
The case was no longer cracks.
It was a wall collapsing.
At 3:11, Detective Reed arrived at the advocacy center in person.
That terrified me more than another phone call.
He asked Dana to join us.
Then he sat across from me.
“Do you recognize this woman?”
He showed me a photograph on his phone.
Not Erin.
Older.
Maybe late forties.
Dark blond hair.
Green glasses.
I stared.
“I think I’ve seen her.”
“Where?”
“School.”
“When?”
“A long time ago.”
“How long?”
“Maybe first grade? Kaylee’s first grade.”
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
“What do you remember?”
“She stood near the fence.”
“Did she speak to Kaylee?”
“I don’t know.”
“Was Greg there?”
Maybe.
A memory floated up.
School carnival.
Cotton candy.
A woman arguing with someone near the parking area.
Too vague.
“I’m not sure.”
“Her name is Rebecca Sloan.”
Rebecca.
The letter.
I felt my pulse in my throat.
“Erin’s Rebecca?”
“Possibly.”
“Who is she?”
“Former coworker.”
“Where is she now?”
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
“Missing?”
“Not officially.”
“When did anybody last hear from her?”
“Three years ago.”
My blood went cold.
“Same time as Erin?”
“Within several months.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means we’re looking.”
Then Reed asked, “Did Greg ever mention Rebecca?”
“No.”
“Tasha?”
“No.”
“Did Kaylee?”
“No.”
He put away the phone.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“A lot.”
At least he was honest.
At 4:02, Kaylee came out of a playroom holding a drawing.
It showed two girls beneath a giant yellow sun.
Mia and Kaylee.
Underneath, she had written:
SAFE HOUSE
I swallowed hard.
“Can I keep it?”
“It’s yours.”
I held that drawing like it was something sacred.
At 5:30, we returned home.
Patrol car parked half a block away.
It felt absurd and comforting at once.
Dinner.
Baths.
Homework Mia insisted she had to finish even though nobody cared.
Normal.
We were trying desperately to manufacture normal.
At 7:42, the doorbell rang.
All four of us froze.
My husband looked through the camera.
“Police.”
I opened the door.
Detective Chen stood there.
Alone.
She held an envelope.
“Can we talk?”
We sat at the kitchen table.
Kaylee and Mia stayed upstairs.
“What happened?”
“We identified Rebecca Sloan.”
“I thought you already knew who she was.”
“We knew her name.”
“Now?”
“We know more.”
Chen placed the envelope on the table.
“Rebecca worked with Erin at a dental clinic.”
“Okay.”
“She quit abruptly three years ago.”
“When?”
“Two weeks after Erin’s disappearance.”
My husband sat beside me.
“Where did she go?”
“Nobody knows.”
“Family?”
“She has a sister in Oregon who hasn’t heard from her in almost three years.”
I felt sick.
“Two missing women?”
“One officially missing now.”
“What?”
“Rebecca’s sister filed a report today after detectives contacted her.”
“Why hadn’t she reported her before?”
“Rebecca was known for leaving town suddenly. Their relationship was strained.”
Of course.
Again, people disappear into explanations when nobody looks closely enough.
Chen opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed photograph.
Rebecca.
Erin.
And Greg.
They stood outside a small diner.
Date stamp.
Three weeks before Erin vanished.
“Where did you get this?”
“Storage unit.”
“What were they doing?”
“We don’t know.”
Then another photograph.
Greg and Rebecca.
No Erin.
Outside the same diner.
Two days later.
Then another.
Tasha.
Rebecca.
Parking lot.
Another date.
One week before Erin disappeared.
“What is this?”
“We’re figuring that out.”
“Why would Tasha know Erin’s coworker?”
“That’s one of the questions.”
Then Chen took out a photocopy of something handwritten.
“I can’t give you the original.”
“What is it?”
“A note recovered from the storage unit.”
“Written by Erin?”
“We believe so.”
“What does it say?”
Chen pushed it toward me.
Only part of the page was legible.
Most had water damage.
But three sentences remained readable.
I can paraphrase what they said because I remember them better than my own phone number.
Erin wrote that Greg had found out.
She wrote that Rebecca was helping her.
And she wrote:
If anything happens, Kaylee must never be left with Tasha.
I stared at that line.
My husband said, “So Erin knew Tasha before she disappeared?”
“Apparently.”
“How?”
“We don’t know.”
“Tasha became Greg’s wife after Erin left.”
“Correct.”
“How long after?”
“Eleven months.”
“So Erin already knew her.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Chen.
“Was Greg cheating?”
“Possible.”
“With Tasha?”
“Possible.”
“Was Erin trying to leave him?”
“Possible.”
I slammed my hand lightly against the table.
“Everything is possible.”
“Until it becomes provable.”
I hated that sentence even more now.
Then we heard Kaylee upstairs.
“Mom?”
She stopped herself.
Silence.
Then:
“Mia’s mom?”
I stood.
“I’m here.”
“Can you come up?”
I left the papers and went upstairs.
Kaylee sat on Mia’s bed.
She looked embarrassed.
“What happened?”
“I almost called you Mom.”
My chest tightened.
“It’s okay.”
“I know you’re not.”
“I know.”
“Did I make you mad?”
“No.”
She looked toward the floor.
“Can I ask something?”
“Anything.”
“If my real mom comes back…”
My heart broke before she finished.
“Yeah?”
“Do I have to choose?”
I sat beside her.
“No.”
“Between you and her?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Completely.”
“But if she comes back, you won’t want me anymore.”
I could barely speak.
“Kaylee, adults can care about you at the same time.”
“Even if she wants me?”
“Especially then.”
She leaned against me.
Small.
Warm.
Exhausted.
I stayed until she fell asleep.
When I returned downstairs, Detective Chen was standing by the door.
“I have to go.”
“Anything else?”
“One thing.”
Of course.
Always one thing.
“Tasha asked for a lawyer.”
“Not surprising.”
“Before she stopped answering questions, she said something.”
“What?”
“She claims Erin is alive.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“She says Erin left willingly.”
“Then why the belongings? Passport? letters?”
“Tasha claims Erin couldn’t take them.”
“Why?”
“She wouldn’t say.”
“Where is Erin?”
“Tasha says she doesn’t know.”
“Do you believe her?”
Chen didn’t answer.
“But there’s more.”
“What?”
“Tasha said Greg knows.”
My husband stood.
“Greg knows where Erin is?”
“That’s what she claims.”
“And what does Greg say?”
“He says Tasha is lying.”
I laughed.
A terrible exhausted laugh.
“So now they’re turning on each other.”
“Possibly.”
“What happens next?”
“We keep working.”
Not satisfying.
But true.
The next morning, Greg was arrested.
Not for Erin.
Not for Rebecca.
Not for whatever the locked room meant.
For obstruction.
Evidence tampering.
And charges related to Kaylee’s treatment that I won’t pretend I fully understood that day.
Tasha remained in custody on separate allegations.
For the first time since Friday night, I felt like maybe Kaylee could breathe.
I should have known better than to trust quiet.
At 1:17 that afternoon, Detective Chen called.
Her voice was different.
Faster.
“We found someone.”
I gripped the phone.
“Erin?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“What does that mean?”
“We searched property connected to the storage receipt.”
“I thought you already searched the storage unit.”
“Not the unit.”
“What property?”
“The company owner has another lot.”
My heart pounded.
“What did you find?”
“A woman.”
Everything inside me stopped.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
I sank into a chair.
“Oh my God.”
“She is alive.”
“Is it Erin?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“How can you not know?”
“She doesn’t have identification.”
“What does she say her name is?”
Silence.
“Detective?”
“She hasn’t spoken.”
My relief turned instantly into dread.
“Where was she?”
Chen hesitated.
“In a small caretaker building behind the storage property.”
“Was she being held there?”
“We’re investigating.”
“How long had she been there?”
“We don’t know.”
“Does she look like Erin?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
My hand flew over my mouth.
“Does Kaylee know?”
“No.”
“Don’t tell her.”
“We won’t.”
“Can I see the woman?”
“No.”
“Can Kaylee identify her?”
“Not yet.”
“What happens now?”
“Medical evaluation. Fingerprints. DNA if necessary.”
I could barely breathe.
“Detective…”
“Yes?”
“Does Greg know?”
“No.”
“Tasha?”
“No.”
Then Chen said, “There’s something else.”
I almost laughed again.
Of course.
“What?”
“When officers entered the building, the woman was holding something.”
“What?”
“A photograph.”
My heart hammered.
“Of who?”
“Kaylee.”
I closed my eyes.
“Recent?”
“Not exactly.”
“What do you mean?”
“It appears to be the same photograph from Cedar Lake.”
The one Kaylee carried inside her horse book.
Mommy and me.
I will always come back.
“But Kaylee has that photograph.”
“I know.”
“So how can the woman have it too?”
“A second copy.”
My hands shook.
“What was on the back?”
Silence.
“What was written on the back?”
Chen answered.
“One sentence.”
I could hear paper moving.
Then she read me the meaning.
It said:
If you find my daughter, tell her Rebecca kept her promise.
I went completely still.
“Rebecca?”
“Yes.”
“Then the woman isn’t Erin.”
“We haven’t identified her yet.”
“But why would she have that?”
“We don’t know.”
“When was it written?”
“Unknown.”
“Who wrote it?”
“Unknown.”
Then Chen said something that turned the entire case upside down.
“The woman has a scar on her wrist.”
“So?”
“We found an old employee record photo for Rebecca Sloan.”
My stomach dropped.
“Same scar?”
“Same location.”
I stood without realizing it.
“You think the woman is Rebecca.”
“We think it’s possible.”
“Then where is Erin?”
Silence.
“Detective.”
“We still don’t know.”
That evening, Kaylee asked whether the police had found her mother.
I said they were looking.
I hated myself for not giving her more.
But Detective Chen had been clear.
Nothing yet.
No false hope.
No speculation.
The next morning, DNA confirmed the woman was Rebecca Sloan.
She had been missing for nearly three years.
Alive.
Thin.
Dehydrated.
Traumatized.
But alive.
And when she finally spoke, she asked for one person.
Not police.
Not her sister.
Not a lawyer.
She asked for Kaylee.
Detectives refused.
Not until they understood why.
Rebecca gave them a reason.
She said:
“Because Erin made me promise I’d tell her daughter the truth.”
When Detective Chen repeated that sentence to me, my hands went numb.
“What truth?”
“Rebecca says Erin did not abandon Kaylee.”
“I know that much.”
“No.”
Chen’s voice lowered.
“She says nobody understands what happened.”
“Then tell me.”
“She is giving a formal statement now.”
“What happened to Erin?”
“I don’t know yet.”
I closed my eyes.
“Is she alive?”
Another pause.
“Rebecca says she was.”
“Was?”
The word hit me.
“She says Erin was alive the last time she saw her.”
“When?”
“Two years after Greg told Kaylee she had left.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Two years.
Erin had been alive for two years after her daughter believed she’d disappeared.
“Where?”
“Rebecca hasn’t finished her statement.”
“Why didn’t she contact Kaylee?”
“That’s exactly what detectives are asking.”
Then Chen added:
“Rebecca says Erin tried.”
“How?”
“Letters. Calls. Someone intercepted them.”
“Greg?”
“We don’t know.”
“Tasha?”
“We don’t know.”
“What happened after that?”
Chen was silent.
“Please.”
Finally she said:
“Rebecca told detectives Erin discovered something about Greg and Tasha.”
“What?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Was that why she disappeared?”
“Possibly.”
“What did she discover?”
“Rebecca used one phrase.”
“What phrase?”
“She called it their arrangement.”
I stared at the wall.
“What arrangement?”
“We don’t know.”
Again.
Again those words.
But this time, they wouldn’t remain unanswered for long.
At 4:40 that afternoon, Detective Chen arrived at our house again.
She looked more shaken than I had ever seen her.
Not scared.
Not exactly.
But affected.
Detectives are trained not to bring emotion into your kitchen.
Chen brought it anyway.
“Rebecca finished her statement.”
My husband and I sat across from her.
Kaylee and Mia were upstairs.
“What did she say?”
Chen placed her notebook on the table.
“Three years ago, Erin Whitman was preparing to leave Greg.”
I nodded.
“She believed Greg had been taking money from accounts she didn’t know existed.”
“What kind of accounts?”
“Still investigating.”
“Where does Tasha fit?”
“Rebecca says Tasha was involved.”
“In the money?”
“Possibly.”
“Was Greg having an affair with her?”
“Yes.”
The certainty startled me.
“Rebecca knew?”
“Erin knew.”
“Then why didn’t Erin just leave?”
“She tried.”
Chen looked down at her notebook.
“Greg threatened to take Kaylee.”
My chest tightened.
“Legal custody?”
“According to Rebecca, Greg told Erin he had enough evidence to make her look unstable.”
“What evidence?”
“Medication history. Therapy records. Edited messages.”
My stomach turned.
“Edited?”
“Rebecca claims Greg manipulated communications.”
“Can you prove it?”
“Not yet.”
“Then Erin ran?”
“No.”
“She stayed?”
“She started collecting evidence.”
“The blue box?”
“Part of it.”
Everything clicked slightly.
Not fully.
But enough.
“The blue box was Erin’s?”
“Rebecca says yes.”
“Then why did Tasha have it?”
“Because after Erin vanished, they found it.”
“Where?”
“Rebecca doesn’t know.”
“What was Erin collecting?”
“Financial records. Messages. Proof of the affair. Something else.”
“What?”
“Rebecca doesn’t know.”
“What was the locked room?”
Chen stopped.
That hesitation terrified me.
“According to Rebecca, it wasn’t originally a locked room.”
“What?”
“It was a storage space.”
“When did it become locked?”
“After Erin disappeared.”
I felt sick.
“Why?”
“Rebecca says Greg used it to hide things.”
“People?”
“She doesn’t know.”
“Then how did Rebecca end up in that caretaker building?”
That was the question.
Chen stared at me.
“Rebecca says she went looking for Erin.”
“Three years ago?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“She confronted Greg.”
“What happened?”
“Her memory becomes inconsistent after that.”
“Inconsistent how?”
“She remembers being struck.”
My husband swore under his breath.
“By Greg?”
“She doesn’t know.”
“Tasha?”
“She doesn’t know.”
“Then what?”
“She remembers waking somewhere dark.”
My stomach turned.
“The locked room.”
“Maybe.”
“Jesus.”
“She later remembers being moved.”
“To the storage property?”
“Eventually.”
“How does somebody keep a person hidden for three years?”
“We’re investigating everyone who had access.”
“Did the storage owner know?”
“Claims he didn’t.”
“Do you believe him?”
Chen almost smiled despite everything.
“You know the answer.”
Evidence.
Right.
“What about Erin?”
Chen looked at me.
“Rebecca says Erin found her.”
My breath stopped.
“What?”
“About eight months after Rebecca disappeared.”
“Erin found Rebecca alive?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t they go to police?”
“Rebecca says Erin was terrified.”
“Of Greg?”
“Greg and someone else.”
“Tasha?”
“No.”
My skin prickled.
“Who?”
“Rebecca didn’t know the person’s real name.”
“What did Erin call them?”
Chen leaned forward.
“Mr. Vale.”
I stared.
“Who is that?”
“We’re working on it.”
“What did he do?”
“Rebecca says Erin believed Greg owed him money.”
“What kind of money?”
“Unknown.”
“Criminal?”
“Unknown.”
“Why would that matter to Erin?”
“Because Erin believed Kaylee was being used as leverage.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
Chen raised a hand.
“Not physically.”
“Then what?”
“Greg allegedly told Erin that if she exposed him, he would disappear with Kaylee.”
My heart pounded so hard it hurt.
“So Erin stayed away to protect her?”
“That’s what Rebecca says.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It might have to Erin.”
“She could have gone to police.”
“People under threat don’t always behave how outsiders expect.”
I knew that.
Kaylee herself had proven it.
“Then where is Erin now?”
Chen looked down.
“Rebecca says Erin left the property two years ago.”
“Where did she go?”
“To get help.”
“From whom?”
“A lawyer.”
“Name?”
“Rebecca didn’t know.”
“Did she come back?”
“No.
“And Rebecca never saw her again?”
“No.”
“Then Erin could still be alive.”
“Yes.”
Hope is cruel when you’ve been denied it long enough.
I didn’t want to feel it.
I did anyway.
“What happened to Rebecca after Erin left?”
“She says someone moved her again shortly afterward.”
“Who?”
“She remembers Tasha.”
My whole body went cold.
“Tasha kept Rebecca hidden?”
“That’s what Rebecca alleges.”
“Then Tasha knows everything.”
“Possibly.”
“Ask her.”
“We are.”
“And?”
“She’s denying it.”
Of course.
I laughed bitterly.
“What about Greg?”
“He says he has never met Rebecca Sloan.”
I stared at Chen.
“You have photographs.”
“Yes.”
“Then he’s lying.”
“Yes.”
The first clean certainty.
Greg was lying.
I almost felt relief.
At least one thing was finally solid.
Then Chen reached into her bag.
“Rebecca also gave us a location.”
My pulse jumped.
“For Erin?”
“Maybe.”
“What location?”
“A motel.”
“What motel?”
“Closed now. About an hour north.”
“Why?”
“Rebecca says Erin told her she had hidden something there.”
“What?”
“Evidence.”
“Of the arrangement?”
“Possibly.”
“Are police going?”
“Already there.”
The call came at 7:23.
This time Chen was still sitting at our kitchen table when her phone rang.
She listened.
Her face changed.
“What?”
My husband stood.
Chen held up a finger.
“You’re sure?”
Pause.
“Room number?”
Another pause.
“Okay. Don’t touch anything else.”
She ended the call.
“What did they find?”
She looked at us.
“Room seventeen.”
“What’s in room seventeen?”
“The motel has been closed for eighteen months. Most rooms were cleared.”
“But?”
“Room seventeen wasn’t.”
“Why?”
“Owner says somebody paid cash to keep it locked.”
“For three years?”
“Apparently.”
“What did they find?”
“A suitcase.”
My heart jumped.
“What color?”
“Black.”
Not red.
“And inside?”
“Documents.”
“What kind?”
“Photocopies. Records.”
“Erin’s evidence?”
“Looks possible.”
“What else?”
“A laptop.”
“Can it turn on?”
“Don’t know yet.”
“And?”
Chen hesitated.
“A video camera.”
My stomach tightened.
“With footage?”
“There’s a memory card.”
“What’s on it?”
“Not processed yet.”
“Anything else?”
“An envelope.”
“For who?”
She looked toward the stairs.
“Kaylee.”
My heart stopped.
“Written by Erin?”
“We think so.”
“How old?”
“Date on the envelope is nineteen months ago.”
Nineteen months.
Long after Erin supposedly disappeared.
Long after Rebecca said she left looking for help.
Erin had been alive.
Nineteen months ago.
“Open it.”
“We will.”
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Does Kaylee get it?”
“Eventually.”
“I hate that word.”
“I know.”
Chen left.
I stood in my kitchen staring at the stairs.
Kaylee was upstairs probably brushing her teeth.
She had no idea a letter from her mother had just been found in an abandoned motel room.
No idea that her mother had been alive far longer than she’d been told.
No idea that the story she’d lived with for three years was falling apart hour by hour.
At 9:16, Detective Chen called.
“Are you alone?”
I stepped into the garage.
“Yes.”
“The letter was opened.”
My throat closed.
“And?”
“Most of it is personal.”
“Is Erin alive?”
“The letter doesn’t say where she planned to go.”
“But?”
“There’s something you need to know because it may affect Kaylee’s safety.”
My skin prickled.
“What?”
“Erin believed somebody inside Briar Creek Elementary was giving Greg information.”
I stared at the garage wall.
“What?”
“Attendance. Meetings. Counselor visits.”
“Who?”
“The letter doesn’t identify the person.”
“No.”
My mind raced backward.
Tasha arriving at school.
Knowing we were there.
The tracker explained that.
Maybe.
But what if it hadn’t?
“What did Erin write?”
Chen summarized.
Erin had tried contacting someone at the school years earlier about Kaylee.
Greg somehow found out almost immediately.
After that, Erin believed someone there was warning him whenever she tried to approach.
“Teacher?”
“Unknown.”
“Administrator?”
“Unknown.”
“Mrs. Fox?”
“No evidence.”
“Nurse?”
“No evidence.”
“Who?”
“We don’t know.”
Then a thought hit me.
“The note.”
“What note?”
“The one in Kaylee’s backpack.”
Kaylee is dramatic about shoes.
Please don’t encourage attention-seeking.
Tasha’s neat teacher handwriting even though Tasha wasn’t a teacher.
Why had that always bothered me?
Teacher handwriting.
School language.
Attention-seeking.
Dramatic.
Terms that sound casually clinical when used by someone who knows how schools document behavior.
“Could Tasha have worked at the school?”
“Not according to records.”
“Volunteered?”
“Frequently.”
“Enough to know people.”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“Detective.”
“Yes?”
“Who called Tasha when we were at the school?”
Silence.
“We still don’t know.”
The question had been there from the beginning.
We blamed the tracker.
But the tracker only told Tasha where Kaylee’s backpack was.
It didn’t necessarily tell her Kaylee was inside Mrs. Fox’s office.
It didn’t tell her the shoes were in a grocery bag.
It didn’t tell her a mandated report had been made.
Unless…
Someone told her.
“What if the tracker isn’t how she knew?”
Chen’s voice sharpened.
“Stay home.”
“What?”
“Do not contact anyone from the school tonight.”
“Why?”
“Just don’t.”
“Do you think somebody there is involved?”
“We don’t know.”
Always those words.
Then she ended the call.
I barely slept.
The next morning was Monday.
School day.
Mia didn’t go.
Neither did Kaylee.
At 8:07, three police cars arrived at Briar Creek Elementary.
At 8:19, Detective Reed walked into the administrative office.
At 8:31, one employee was escorted into a conference room.
At 9:04, Detective Chen called me.
“We identified the person Erin referenced.”
My knees weakened.
“Who?”
There was a long pause.
And then she said a name.
A name I knew.
A name Kaylee trusted.
A name that had been inside the room with us from the beginning.
“Mrs. Dalton.”
The school nurse.
I couldn’t speak.
“The nurse?”
“Yes.”
“She made the child services call.”
“She did.”
“She helped Kaylee.”
“She appeared to.”
“She looked horrified.”
“People can look like many things.”
I thought about her crouching near Kaylee.
No touching unless you say I can.
I thought about how quickly she knew procedures.
How calm she stayed.
How she had been in the office before police arrived.
“What did she do?”
“We’re investigating.”
“Did she call Tasha?”
“Phone records show contact.”
My stomach turned.
“When?”
“Seven thirty-one Saturday morning.”
The school nurse called Tasha seven minutes after she called for urgent help.
Seven minutes.
While Kaylee was inside the counselor’s office.
“Why?”
“Dalton claims she was notifying a guardian.”
“Then why hide it?”
“She didn’t initially disclose the call.”
“Jesus.”
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“She called Greg several times over the last three years.”
“Maybe school issues.”
“Some calls were from her personal phone.”
My hands began shaking.
“Was she the one giving them information?”
“We believe she may have been one source.”
“One?”
The word frightened me.
“There’s another?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Before I could ask more, somebody knocked on the front door.
I looked toward it.
“Someone’s here.”
“Who?”
I checked the camera.
Dana.
“It’s Dana.”
“Let her in.”
Dana came inside carrying a folder.
Her face was pale.
“What happened?”
She looked toward the stairs.
“Where’s Kaylee?”
“Upstairs with Mia.”
“Good.”
“What happened?”
She lowered her voice.
“We need to move Kaylee.”
My heart dropped.
“What?”
“Temporarily.”
“No.”
“This isn’t about you.”
“Then what is it?”
“We have reason to believe her current location may have been shared.”
I stared at her.
“By who?”
“We don’t know.”
“Nobody knows she’s here except everybody who’s been involved.”
“Exactly.”
The word landed hard.
Police.
Child services.
School.
Hospital.
Court.
Too many people.
Too many systems.
Too many chances for information to leak.
“Where will she go?”
“Confidential placement.”
“With strangers?”
“For tonight.”
“No.”
“I know.”
“She just started sleeping.”
“I know.”
“She asks permission to eat.”
“I know.”
“She thinks safety disappears when adults change shifts.”
Dana’s eyes filled.
Just slightly.
“I know.”
“Then don’t do this.”
“I have to.”
I hated her for about thirty seconds.
Then I understood why.
If someone inside the system was helping Greg or Tasha, my house was no longer safe.
Not because of me.
Because they knew it.
I went upstairs.
Kaylee sat on the floor building something with plastic blocks.
“Mia, can you give us a minute?”
Mia looked at my face.
“No.”
“Mia.”
“No.”
Kaylee already knew.
Kids always know.
“I’m leaving?”
I sat beside her.
“Just for a little while.”
Her face went blank.
“No.”
“It’s not because—”
“You said I could stay.”
“I said as long as they let us.”
“You said safe.”
“I know.”
“You lied.”
That hurt more than anything.
“I didn’t mean to.”
“You lied.”
She stood.
“You all lie.”
“Kaylee.”
“Mom lied. Dad lied. Tasha lies. You lie.”
Mia started crying.
I didn’t stop Kaylee.
She had the right to be angry.
“You promised.”
“I promised we’d try to keep you safe.”
“This is not safe.”
“I know.”
“No you don’t!”
She threw one plastic block.
Not at me.
At the wall.
Then froze.
Absolute terror crossed her face.
“I’m sorry.”
I stood slowly.
“You’re allowed to be angry.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“Kaylee.”
She looked at me.
“You are allowed to be angry.”
Her chin trembled.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
She burst into tears.
I held her.
She clung to my shirt.
“I don’t want to go.”
“I know.”
“Please.”
“I know.”
Mia wrapped herself around both of us.
For one minute, all three of us cried on the floor.
Then Dana’s phone rang downstairs.
She answered.
A minute later she called my name.
Something in her voice.
I went down.
“What?”
She looked stunned.
“Police found Erin.”
I stopped.
Everything stopped.
“Alive?”
Dana nodded.
My knees gave.
I sat on the step.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“They traced the lawyer named in Rebecca’s statement.”
“And?”
“The lawyer had been protecting a client under another name.”
“Erin?”
“Yes.”
“Oh my God.”
“She entered a protected domestic violence relocation program nineteen months ago.”
My hands covered my face.
Alive.
Alive.
Alive.
The word didn’t feel real.
“Does Kaylee know?”
“No.”
“Tell her.”
“We can’t yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Erin doesn’t know what’s happened.”
“What?”
“Police are contacting her now.”
“She thinks Kaylee is still with Greg?”
Dana nodded.
I couldn’t imagine it.
Nineteen months.
A mother somewhere believing distance kept her child alive.
A child here believing abandonment meant she wasn’t loved.
Both of them living inside lies built by other people.
“Why didn’t Erin take Kaylee?”
“That’s complicated.”
“I don’t care.”
“According to preliminary information, Erin believed Greg would kill her if she tried.”
I went cold.
“Did he threaten that?”
“Apparently.”
“What about Kaylee?”
“She believed taking Kaylee would trigger him to run.”
“So she left her?”
“She thought she was building a legal case to return safely.”
“For nineteen months?”
“She had been working through attorneys.”
“Why did nobody contact child services?”
“Apparently they did.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Reports were made.”
“Then why was Kaylee still there?”
“We’re investigating.”
The school nurse.
Information leaks.
Missing reports?
What else had been buried?
Dana whispered, “There are bigger problems here than we knew.”
My phone rang.
Detective Chen.
I answered.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
“Erin is alive.”
“Yes.”
“Does she know Kaylee is safe?”
“She does now.”
My eyes filled.
“What did she say?”
Chen paused.
“She cried.”
I turned away.
“Can she talk to Kaylee?”
“Soon.”
“When?”
“We’re arranging it.”
“Is she coming here?”
“Possibly.”
“Today?”
“Maybe.”
Then Chen said, “But there’s a problem.”
I almost laughed.
There was always a problem.
“What?”
“Erin says she never wrote the motel letter.”
My body went cold.
“What?”
“The letter addressed to Kaylee.”
“She didn’t write it?”
“She says no.”
“But the handwriting?”
“Similar.”
“Then who did?”
“We don’t know.”
“What about the other letters?”
“Some may be genuine.”
“Which ones?”
“Processing.”
I stared at Dana.
She could see from my face something had changed.
Chen continued.
“Erin also says she never used the name Mr. Vale.”
“What?”
“She doesn’t know anyone by that name.”
“Then Rebecca lied?”
“Not necessarily.”
“How?”
“Rebecca may have been told things Erin never told her.”
“By who?”
“We’re investigating.”
“Everything we thought we knew just changed again.”
“Yes.”
Then Chen’s voice became even quieter.
“And Erin says something else.”
“What?”
“She says the night she disappeared, she left Kaylee with someone she trusted.”
I felt my pulse jump.
“Greg?”
“No.”
“Tasha?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“She refuses to say over the phone.”
“Why?”
“Because she believes that person may still be involved.”
“Involved in what?”
“In making her disappear.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who is it?”
Chen took a breath.
“Erin is coming to the station.”
“And?”
“She says she will identify them in person.”
“Does she know about Mrs. Dalton?”
“Yes.”
“Is it her?”
“No.”
My heart stopped.
“Then there’s someone else.”
“Yes.”
“Someone Kaylee knows?”
A long pause.
“Very well.”
Upstairs, I heard Mia laughing at something Kaylee said.
Two little girls.
Safe for the moment.
Oblivious to the fact that the woman everyone thought had abandoned Kaylee was alive.
Oblivious to the fact that the school nurse may have betrayed her.
Oblivious to the fact that Erin believed there was still one more person inside Kaylee’s life who had helped keep the truth buried.
“Detective.”
“Yes?”
“Who?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Then another voice spoke faintly near Chen.
A man’s voice.
Detective Reed.
She answered him.
“What?”
Silence.
Then she said:
“You’re sure?”
My stomach dropped.
“Detective?”
She didn’t answer me.
I heard movement.
A door.
Papers.
Then Chen returned.
Her voice had changed completely.
“We just got Erin’s statement.”
“What did she say?”
Another pause.
“She named the person.”
“Who?”
Chen took a breath.
And when she said the name, I couldn’t make sense of it.
Because it was impossible.
Because that person had been standing beside us while Kaylee cried.
Because that person had comforted her.
Protected her.
Called police.
Locked doors.
Promised she was safe.
The person Erin named…
was Angela Fox.
The school counselor…..

TO BE CONTINUED
