him into the back of an unmarked vehicle in the visitor lot.
I didn’t know why they had brought him there.
Maybe for questioning.
Maybe he had demanded to see Kaylee.<br decipher.
But one set of initials appeared again and again.
G.W.
Greg Whitman.
Kaylee’s father.
Beside those initials were dollar amounts.
$800.
$1,200.
$2,000.
$750.
Not payments from Greg.
Payments to Greg.
The man who walked outside while his daughter stood barefoot on a punishment mat had not simply been afraid of his wealthy wife.
He had been making money.
When Detective Ortiz eventually told me that, I refused to believe it.
“No.”
She didn’t argue.
She just slid a copy of a court document across the table.
Greg had claimed Tasha controlled him financially.
That was partly true.
What he hadn’t mentioned was that Tasha had also been paying him to participate in videos.
Not all of them showed physical punishment.
Some were staged “discipline demonstrations” Tasha shared inside private online groups obsessed with extreme parenting.
Adults exchanged money for recordings.
They rated punishments.
Suggested new ones.
Argued about which children were “manipulative.”
And somewhere along the way, Tasha stopped pretending it was about parenting at all.
Kaylee and Caleb had become content.
Greg knew.
Worse, in several recordings, Greg could be heard behind the camera.
At 4:53 the afternoon of the hospital visit, Kaylee and Caleb were placed temporarily with their maternal aunt, a woman named Rebecca whom Tasha had apparently worked very hard to remove from their lives.
I met her in the hospital lobby.
She came running through the doors with tears streaming down
