Dad fell from scaffolding. Mr. Harris grabbed him before he hit the ground.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Sal.<br \/>\nHe nodded slowly.<br \/>\n\u201cWe checked the story.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou checked it?\u201d<br \/>\nSal sighed.<br \/>\n\u201cI found out about this about two months ago.\u201d<br \/>\nMy head snapped toward him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe begged me not to tell you.\u201d<br \/>\nI turned toward my son.<br \/>\n\u201cYou made your boss keep secrets from me?\u201d<br \/>\nEvan\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t want you to stop me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cStop you from doing what?\u201d<br \/>\nHe looked at the receipts scattered across the floor.<br \/>\nThat was when the answer finally began forming in my mind.<br \/>\nThe missing paychecks.<br \/>\nThe grocery receipts.<br \/>\nThe supplies.<br \/>\nThe cash.<br \/>\nI whispered,<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve been giving your money to him.\u201d<br \/>\nEvan nodded.<br \/>\nEvery paycheck.<br \/>\nEvery Saturday.<br \/>\nFor six months.<br \/>\nThe bicycle had never been the real plan.<br \/>\nNot after Evan met Mr. Harris.<br \/>\nI felt as though the room had shifted beneath my feet.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\nEvan\u2019s lips trembled.<br \/>\n\u201cBecause he has nobody.\u201d<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t know what to say.<br \/>\nEvan continued.<br \/>\n\u201cHe sleeps near the creek. He has problems with his legs, so some places won\u2019t hire him.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at the packages.<br \/>\n\u201cYou bought all of this for him?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSome of it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSome?\u201d<br \/>\nEvan wiped his nose.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are two other people near the bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<br \/>\n\u201cA woman named Diane and her little boy.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow old is the boy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cEight.\u201d<br \/>\nI closed my eyes.<br \/>\nThis was becoming bigger with every sentence.<br \/>\nSal quietly said,<br \/>\n\u201cYour son uses his paycheck to buy groceries and supplies. Sometimes the employees contribute too.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked around the kitchen.<br \/>\nSeveral workers avoided my eyes.<br \/>\nOne young waitress gave me a small embarrassed smile.<br \/>\n\u201cWe started helping after we found out,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nMy eyes returned to Evan.<br \/>\n\u201cBut the money I saw in your bedroom?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDonations.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFrom who?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPeople at the diner.\u201d<br \/>\nSal crossed his arms.<br \/>\n\u201cHe started telling regular customers about the families near the creek.
