The blue dot sat on a street I had heard him mention for years: quiet, tree-lined, with a good school nearby. It was the kind of place he and Chloe had supposedly been saving for while they lived under my roof.
“How do you know it’s the same house?” Sarah asked.
“I went to see it with her last spring. She said the owner rejected our offer.”
On the screen, Noah’s backpack had stopped moving.
Sarah relayed the address to the officer who had called her. Mitchell was already halfway to the front door when she finished.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“To get my son.”
“The officers have the address,” Sarah said. “Wait until they tell you what they find.”
Mitchell turned to me, his face crumpling. “She sent you a picture of him crying.”
“I saw it.”
“She thinks I’ll make you withdraw the petition.”
“Then don’t give her what she wants.”
He stared at me. All morning, Chloe had tried to make him choose between his mother and his son. I could see how badly he wanted someone to tell him that choice was real.
Sarah stepped closer. “If Noah sees you arrive angry, and Chloe sees the police behind you, things could get harder for him. Give the officers a minute.”
Mitchell sat down because his legs seemed unable to hold him.
I refreshed the map.
The dot did not move.
A minute later, the officer called back. A patrol car had reached the address. There was a dark SUV in the driveway. The front windows were covered by blinds, and no one answered the door.
“They see the car?” Mitchell asked.
Sarah nodded.
“Is Noah inside?”
“They don’t know yet.”
I looked toward Arthur’s hutch. Inside its glass doors were photographs of Christmas dinners, school plays, Noah missing his two front teeth. I had spent four years fearing what Chloe might take from me. At that moment, I would have handed her every piece of furniture in the house for one word from my grandson.
Grandma.
I touched the phone screen again.
The dot moved.
“It’s moving,” I said.
Mitchell sprang up.
The little blue mark slid away from the house, turned a corner, and stopped near a patch of green on the map.
“There’s a park,” Mitchell said. “At the end of that street.”
Sarah passed the information to the officer.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I did not recognize appeared beneath the map.
Grandma, it’s me. I’m at the little bridge. Mom doesn’t know I left.
I showed Mitchell.
He made a sound I had never heard from him before, somewhere between a gasp and a sob.
“Is this Noah’s number?” Sarah asked.
“No,” Mitchell said. “She took his phone last week because he kept calling Mom.”
My fingers hovered over the screen.
Are you safe? I typed.
Three dots appeared, vanished, and appeared again.
I think so. A lady let me use her phone. Please don’t tell Mom where I am.
I wrote back, Stay with the lady. Officers are coming to help you. Dad and I are here.
The reply came almost at once.
She said you were going away forever.
I could no longer see the screen clearly. My eyesight had troubled me for months, but this blur was tears.
Before I could answer, Sarah’s phone rang.
The officer had found Noah near the park bridge with a woman walking her dog. She had called for help after he approached her and asked to borrow her phone. He was frightened but unharmed.
Mitchell bent over with both hands on his knees.
I put a hand on his back.
For the first time that morning, he did not pull away.
Sarah listened for another moment, then her expression changed.
“What did he say?” she asked the officer.
Mitchell straightened.
Sarah looked from him to me. “Noah says Chloe brought him to that house to show him his new bedroom. She told him you had chosen to put yourself in a care center, Eleanor, and that he wouldn’t be allowed to visit.”
“That’s why he was crying,” I said.
“There’s more,” Sarah replied.
I gripped my walker.
“Noah says Chloe left him alone in the kitchen while she went into a room downstairs. He heard her on the phone saying she needed to ‘get the papers before they get here.’ When she came back, he slipped out through the back door with his backpack.”
Mitchell’s relief had barely begun to settle. Now dread took its place.
“What papers?”
Sarah asked the officer whether anyone had seen Chloe leave the house. The patrol car was still out front. Her SUV remained in the driveway.
An officer was attempting to contact her.
Noah, meanwhile, was on his way to the police station with the officer and the woman who had helped him. Mitchell was asked to come there.
“I’m coming too,” I said.
“Mom, you don’t have to.”
“He reached out to me.”
Mitchell nodded. He had no argument for that.
Bill offered to drive us. Sarah followed in her own car.
By the time we arrived, Noah was seated in a small interview room with a paper cup of water. He saw us through the glass wall and ran so quickly that the officer barely had time to open the door.
He threw himself against me.
“I didn’t believe her,” he whispered into my sweater.
I held him as tightly as I could. “I know.”
“She said you wanted us to leave.”
“I wanted you safe, sweetheart.”
He leaned back to study my face. “Are you sick?”
“My eyes need some help. The rest of me is still quite stubborn.”
That earned the tiniest smile.
Mitchell knelt beside us. “I’m sorry, buddy.”
Noah looked at his father for a long moment before stepping into his arms.
An officer let them sit together while Sarah and I spoke in the hall. She had received another call about the house.
Chloe was gone.
Her SUV remained in the driveway, but an officer had seen a rear gate swinging open. No one had yet located her.
“Could she have run when she saw the patrol car?” I asked.
“Possibly,” Sarah said. “They’re checking.”
I thought of the envelope in the SUV and her rush to retrieve papers from downstairs. Whatever Chloe had hidden at that property mattered enough for her to leave her own son waiting in the kitchen.
“Who owns the house?” I asked.
Sarah looked down at her phone. “I’ve requested the property record.”
A door opened behind us.
Noah stepped into the hall, holding Mitchell’s hand. His backpack hung from one shoulder.
“Grandma,” he said, “I need to tell you something.”
“You can tell me anything.”
He glanced at his father. “Mom said I wasn’t supposed to go downstairs, so I never did. But today the door was open.”
“What did you see?” Mitchell asked.
“A lot of boxes.”
“Moving boxes?”
Noah shook his head. “Bank boxes. Like the one Grandma keeps old pictures in.”
My own box of photographs was under my bed. Chloe knew that.
“What was on them?” Sarah asked gently.
“Some had people’s names.”
“Do you remember any?”
“No.” He frowned. “I remember one because it was on a big white folder on the table.”
He looked directly at me.
“It said Arthur.”
For a moment, I could only hear the hum of the lights above us.
Arthur had been dead for nine years.
Sarah’s phone chimed. She read the property record, then handed the screen to me, enlarging the text so I could see it.
The house Mitchell had been told they couldn’t afford had been purchased two years earlier.
The buyer was a company called Arthur Holdings LLC.
Mitchell stared at the name. “Who is that?”
“I have never heard of it,” I said.
Noah tugged at my sleeve.
“Grandma, there was something else in that room. Mom picked it up when she heard the police car.”
“What was it?”
He swallowed.
“A photograph of Grandpa Arthur standing outside that house.”
END OF PART 3

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉PART 4: THE NAME ON THE SECOND DEED

PART 3: THE HOUSE CHLOE HID “That’s the house Chloe told me we couldn’t afford,” Mitchell said.
