\nA few notes from his guitar can bring back memories of Wish You Were Here<\/em>, Comfortably Numb<\/em>, Shine On You Crazy Diamond<\/em>, and some of the most celebrated recordings in rock history.
\nBut behind the music, the enormous stages and the worldwide recognition, Gilmour has also lived through periods when fame meant very little.
\nBecause there are some things success cannot protect you from.
\nAnd one of the most painful chapters of Gilmour\u2019s family life unfolded in 2011.
\nIt involved his adopted son, Charlie.
\nGilmour had entered Charlie\u2019s life when Charlie was very young, after beginning a relationship with Charlie\u2019s mother, writer Polly Samson.
\nFor Gilmour, Charlie was never simply his wife\u2019s child.
\nHe became his son.
\nGilmour eventually adopted him, and the relationship developed into a genuine father-and-son bond.
\nYears later, Gilmour explained that he had felt bonded to Charlie as his father since Charlie was around three years old.
\nThat bond would be tested in a way the family never expected.
\nIn 2010, during a student demonstration in London, Charlie was photographed swinging from a Union flag on the Cenotaph.
\nCharlie later pleaded guilty to violent disorder, and in 2011 he received a 16-month prison sentence.
\nSuddenly, the young man David and Polly had raised was behind bars.
\nAnd David could do very little about it.<\/p>\n
\nHe couldn\u2019t solve the problem with money.
\nAnd he couldn\u2019t simply tell his family everything was going to be fine, because he didn\u2019t know that it would be.
\nYears later, Gilmour spoke unusually candidly about what those months had been like.

\nHe said the family had been extremely concerned about Charlie\u2019s welfare.
\nPolly, frightened about what might happen to her son inside prison, imagined terrible possibilities.
\nDavid responded by trying to become the steady person in the family.
\nHe had to convince his wife that Charlie would probably be safe.
\nBut at the same time, he also had to convince himself.

\nCharlie ultimately served four months in prison, followed by four months under house arrest and then probation.
\nBut something unexpected happened afterward.
\nThe experience that had caused the family so much pain eventually became connected to something hopeful.
\nIn 2014, Charlie returned to Wandsworth Prison.
\nNot as a prisoner.
\nAs a visitor.<\/p>\n
\nCharlie was deeply affected by what he saw.
\nAfter experiencing prison as an inmate, he was struck by seeing something positive taking place inside the same environment.
\nHe encouraged David and Polly to experience the choir themselves.
\nThey did.
\nAnd something began to change.
\nThe prison that had represented fear and helplessness to their family became connected with music, rehabilitation and the possibility of rebuilding.
\nDavid eventually became a patron of Liberty Choir.
\nThe family didn\u2019t pretend the painful period had never happened.
\nThey found a way to make something constructive emerge from it.
\nThat pattern feels particularly fitting in the life of David Gilmour.
\nHis music has repeatedly found beauty inside sadness.

\nWhen Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in 1968, Barrett was already struggling to continue with the group.
\nOnly a handful of performances later, Barrett was gone from the band.
\nYet his absence continued to cast a long shadow over Pink Floyd\u2019s history.
\nDecades passed.
\nFriends and collaborators died.
\nBarrett died in 2006.
\nPink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008.
\nThe young musicians who had once seemed capable of playing forever were becoming older men confronted with mortality.
\nBut Gilmour continued.
\nAnd perhaps that is one of the most revealing things about him.
\nHe didn\u2019t need another album to prove that he could make successful music.
\nHe didn\u2019t need another concert to establish his reputation as a guitarist.

\nThe record openly engaged with aging and mortality.

\nThe album also became deeply connected to family.
