This time, the subject was her own experience with lymphedema following breast cancer surgery.
In April 2016, CBS announced an interview in which Bates spoke about the condition that developed after her 2012 double mastectomy. The network reported that lymph-node removal had resulted in fluid accumulation in her arms, requiring compression garments to help control swelling.

Bates also described the anger she had experienced after the diagnosis. Her account included frustration and a feeling of betrayal—emotions that complicated any simple picture of recovery.
That is a detail worth pausing over.
A medical milestone can be followed by another difficult adjustment. Someone may return to work, appear at an event, and smile for a photograph while still managing consequences that an audience cannot see.
The photograph captures a moment. It cannot explain the whole day.

Bates’ decision to speak publicly gave viewers a fuller picture of that experience. She did not need to turn it into a perfectly polished lesson. The difficult feelings belonged in the account, too.
Perhaps that is why this part of her story has such weight.
The performer audiences knew for powerful characters was discussing something that could leave her feeling vulnerable.
Her public recognition also gave her an opportunity to bring attention to a condition that received less attention than the career that made her famous.
CBS reported that she became a spokesperson for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network and wanted to use her celebrity to help others. The same interview revisited hurtful judgments about her appearance early in her career, including comments about her arms and her supposedly maternal look.
Those two subjects sit together in a revealing way.

Appearance had been used to judge her professional potential.
Later, she spoke publicly about her body on her own terms, drawing attention to a health experience rather than allowing a photograph or someone else’s assumptions to explain it.
That does not erase the earlier hurt. It does show how a public platform can acquire a purpose beyond promoting the next performance.
Years later, another health disclosure generated a very different kind of attention.
In October 2024, Bates told PEOPLE that a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis around 2017 had prompted her to take her health more seriously. She described losing 100 pounds over several years: 80 through diet and lifestyle changes, followed by another 20 with Ozempic.

She emphasized the work involved and reported that the changes had made the physical demands of Matlock easier for her.
The number was striking enough to dominate headlines.
But numbers can become so prominent that they push the person out of the story.
A hundred pounds tells readers the scale of a change. It does not, by itself, explain the decisions, adjustments, and time behind it.
Bates’ account placed the change within a longer process. It also connected her health to something concrete: being able to do work she wanted to do.
For fans, that connection adds depth to the comeback.
A leading television role requires more than the ability to deliver one memorable scene. It means showing up repeatedly, working through a production schedule, and sustaining a character across episodes.
The finished performance is the part audiences receive. Much of the effort happens before they ever press play.
That makes Matlock an interesting meeting point between her personal and professional stories.
The role arrived when she had been considering stepping away from acting. In her September 2024 ABC interview, she explained that reading the script changed her outlook and that she wanted the show to continue for years.
Meanwhile, the character offered a sharp response to the experience of being overlooked.
Matty is an older attorney who understands how quickly people make assumptions about her. The Television Academy described how she uses those assumptions to her advantage, while Bates connected the theme to her own experience of feeling unnoticed.
For viewers, the appeal is easy to understand.

There is satisfaction in watching someone underestimated reveal her abilities.
There is also something moving about seeing an experienced performer receive a role that asks her to remain at the center of the action.
In 2025, that performance brought Bates a historic Emmy nomination. At 77, she became the oldest performer ever nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
The milestone does not tell us everything about her life. Neither do the medical interviews or the photographs. Together, however, they offer a richer portrait than any single headline.
She has spoken about uncertainty.
She has acknowledged painful experiences.
She has found reasons to continue working.

And she has used the attention surrounding her to make room for subjects beyond entertainment.
These are documented chapters from earlier interviews and her 2025 nomination, rather than reports of a new diagnosis or emergency.
Their power comes from what they actually show.

Kathy Bates’ story contains no guarantee that every difficulty disappears. What it does contain is a woman continuing to make choices about her work, her public voice, and what she wants people to understand.
As this series approaches its final chapter, one question remains:
When audiences look back at Kathy Bates, will they remember only the characters she brought to life—or also the way she kept building a life beyond them?

Continue To Read 👉PART 5: SHE STILL HAD SOMETHING TO SAY — FINAL PART

PART 4: THE HEALTH STRUGGLE A RED-CARPET PHOTO COULD NOT SHOW Before the historic Emmy nomination and the excitement surrounding Matlock, Kathy Bates had already invited audiences into a much …

[20,21,1

post-8495","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-celebrity","category-new","category-story
["GET
