Karoline Leavitt is out, and the “bittersweet” farewell she posted to X can’t launder what her tenure actually was: the most systematic assault on the free press any modern podium has delivered.
Look at the record she’s fleeing.
She barred the Associated Press from the briefing room because it wouldn’t rename the Gulf of Mexico to flatter Trump.
She warned reporters from day one that “lies” would be “held accountable,” turning a public briefing into a loyalty test.
She handed the coveted first question to the “new media chair,” stacking her front row with right-wing influencers instead of journalists who’d press her.
And when the questions actually landed, she disappeared. She shattered records for the longest stretches without a briefing, 41 days, then 42, then 94. She stonewalled nine straight Epstein questions in one July session. She called a reporter’s question “stupid” and got the economics wrong anyway.
She branded the Epstein files a “classic Washington hoax,” smiling as she said it. She published a statement calling documents “FAKE NEWS,” then raged at a reporter for quoting her own words back a day later.
But Leavitt was never the whole disease. She was the friendly face on it.
Under this administration the US fell to 57th in the world for press freedom, then to an all-time low. Reporters were arrested covering protests. Outlets got hit with billion-dollar lawsuits. The AP was banished for a word.
That is what a free press dying looks like, and it doesn’t happen without someone at the podium smiling through it.
So goodbye, Karoline. Your family gets you back. The country gets a briefing room you spent two years hollowing out.
And brace yourself folks, because whoever they wheel out to replace her will have watched exactly how she did it, and learned that cruelty to the press gets you promoted, not fired.

Donald Trump took a moment to call attention to Karoline Leavitt‘s appearance while praising her tenure as the White House press secretary.

While departing Israel on Air Force One on Oct. 13, the president took questions from pool reporters on the presidential plane, while Leavitt was standing nearby.

Trump, 79, was answering a question about his international diplomacy when he abruptly pivoted to talk about his 28-year-old press secretary.

“How’s Karoline doing? Is she doing good?” Trump asked reporters of her job performance. “Should Karoline be replaced?”

When the group expressed support for her, Trump assured that replacing her would “never happen.”

As a reporter started to ask another question, Trump continued of Leavitt: “That face… and those lips, they move like a machine gun.”

The president made similar comments about Leavitt — the youngest White House press secretary in history — during an August interview with Newsmax. When host Rob Finnerty asked Trump’s opinion of Leavitt, Trump gave her overwhelming praise, regarding both her work and her physical appearance.

“She’s become a star. It’s that face, it’s that brain, it’s those lips — the way they move, they move like she’s a machine gun,” Trump said, smiling. He then turned to address someone off camera, and asked, “Is she in the room?” She was, Finnerty confirmed.

“She’s a star, and she’s great. I don’t think anybody has ever had a better press secretary than Karoline. She’s been amazing,” Trump added.

Leavitt worked as Trump’s national press secretary during his 2024 presidential campaign, earning her the coveted White House press secretary gig in January.

Leavitt first entered Trump’s political sphere straight out of college, during his previous administration, when she was hired at the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence in 2019. After rising to become associate director of the office, she pivoted to the White House communications team to work as an assistant press secretary.

When Trump’s first term ended in 2021, Leavitt was hired as New York Rep. Elise Stefanik‘s communications director. She soon mounted a congressional run in New Hampshire, unsuccessfully challenging Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas in 2022.
